How Many Portable Toilets Does a Construction Site Need in Malaysia?

ConstructionUpdated 31 October 20262 min read

On a construction site, sanitation is not optional. Workers need clean, working toilets close to where they work, and site audits check for them. If you are a project manager, site supervisor or contractor setting up a new site, the first question is simple: how many units do you need for your crew? Here is how to work it out.

The minimum we advise

We advise at least 1 unit for every 20 workers on site. For larger crews, 1 unit for every 10 workers is more comfortable and cuts the time workers spend queuing, which is time lost from the job.

402 units4 units
603 units6 units
1005 units10 units

Separate male and female units

If both men and women work on your site, provide separate units for each. Count your female workers separately and make sure they have at least one unit of their own. This is basic worker welfare and it avoids complaints during audits.

What DOSH and CIDB expect

Employers must provide adequate sanitary facilities for all workers on site under DOSH guidelines, and CIDB site audits check sanitation as part of overall site compliance. Waste must be collected and disposed of at a licensed facility, not dumped on or near the site.

That last point matters when you choose a supplier. A rental company that cannot show how and where it disposes of waste puts the project at risk, not only the supplier. Our units are serviced by vacuum tanker.

Placing units on site

  • Put units where workers actually are. If the site is large or has several levels, spread units out instead of grouping them at the gate.
  • Keep a clear, level path for the servicing tanker to reach every unit.
  • Plan for site changes. Tell your supplier when work moves to a new area so units can be repositioned.
  • Keep units away from food and rest areas.

Servicing keeps the site compliant

A clean toilet on day one is easy. The test is a clean toilet in week six. Regular scheduled servicing is what keeps units usable and keeps your audit record clean. For a monthly rental, ask the supplier how often units are serviced, what is done at each visit and how you report a problem between visits.

What to tell us when you ask for a quote

  • Site address and the state.
  • Number of workers, and how many are women.
  • Expected start date and length of the project.
  • Whether the site is easy for a truck to reach.
